A flag by any other name is still just a flag, or is it?

The recent Confederate flag controversy has caused quite an uproar in many parts of our nation. Some say this controversy is silly, others that our heritage is at stake, still others see this flag as a horrible and symbolic banner, not just of the South, but representing the institution of slavery itself. Could it be that all these viewpoints are right to some degree? So who designed this flag, what do the seven, nine, 11 and 13 stars represent (the first a lucky number, the last not so much), the stripes, the colors, and which version of this "rebellious" flag are we discussing?
